Untitled Post-Apocalyptic Project

Wed Feb 11, 2009, 4:27 PM
Since I'll be uploading some concepts for a post-apocalyptic comic I have swimming around in my head, figured I'd give some details, so what people think.

Right now, I don't have a name for it. I might throw it at my boyfriend and see if he has any ideas, but, hell, if anyone reads this and has an idea, let me know!

Basically, an alien race has decimated most of the earth's population. Those left behind live in shambles and broken communities ran primarily by a tyrant that has taken control. The aliens still reside on the planet and often abduct people to experiment and enslave. The tyrant has taken a radical approach: demanding the stop of any reproduction. In their pandemonium induced mentalities, the people have agreed, what little law enforcement that exists enforcing these twisted ideals. Women have become sub-servant to men, as bearers of the children that the aliens would seek to capture. Recreational sex isn't permitted and the punishment is fierce. For men, a good beat down, but for the women? Their sexual organs removed brutally. This society barely stays alive through rummaging through the wreckage of what remains of major cities. For one young woman, her life has taken an even worse turn. As one of the youngest since the outlawing of child birth, she had often been a victim of sexually deprived villagers. However, she has a boyfriend and one night, in the heat of the moment, they break the law and have recreational sex. The villagers find out and force her to undergo the punishment. Hurt and violated, she escapes out into the wasteland where she prepares to commit suicide...before a baby's wail interrupts her. Laying in the wreckage is a newborn baby. Its mother? No where to be seen. Now with a newborn baby, seemingly out of nowhere, the young woman finds herself running from the villagers and seeking out someone who may know the origin of the child.

I know it sounds a bit extreme that these people would outlaw something like child birth, but Hitler was able to do far worse after WWI.

The idea behind all this is that life will find a way to continue. I'm still working out the kinks, but the baby is more than a "baby" I suppose. The other thing here is getting into subjects like "what makes a woman a woman? Only her ability to carry children? Or much more?" Obviously, the hero here (and I use hero since I don't believe it should be genderized)is a woman without her internal female organs. They've been brutally ripped from her and she barely survived the process. This story seeks to have strong female characters in an extreme patriarchal world. On her travels, a main character the young woman meets is a middle-aged woman living by herself in the outskirts. An expert sniper that decides to help the young woman out in her travels. Sigourney Weaver is a big inspiration for this character. Hell, if I could "cast" these characters, I'd pick Weaver and the young woman who played Juno as the young woman.

Throughout all this is the looming threat of the alien creatures, which the three do confront during the story. The aliens are pretty creepy looking with some raptor/therapod qualities to them. They're intelligent and they have a round like petrusion on their back that allows them to be telepathic. So, not only do they have to hide physically, they also have to hide mentally from these creatures.

It's all in the planning stages and based off a short story I wrote years ago in High School. Yes, before "Children of Men" and "Fallout 3" which people say sound similar. I can't always help it! It's the "Simpson's did it!" complex, I swear!

Welcome to deviantART! I happened to notice from a comment on ^Cedarseed's page that you want to be a cultural anthropologist. Are you in school now? I'm curious because I'm doing a PhD right now, where deviantART has become a major part of my research activity. I'd be curious to find out if there were other graduate students out there to talk about this stuff with. Anyways, good luck with the comics!

I was going into the cultural anthropology field. I think I may still concentrate on it, but I recently switched my major to Fine Arts. I'd like to get into an art university that has programs on sequential art. It's just such a dream of mine to publish my own graphic novel, and possibly create a comic book publishing company, that I decided to switch it.

However, I still hold a great interest in anthropology and culture in general, so if you do ever want to chat, be my guest.
:iconperkelate:
Thanks! You'll probably hear from me again. Looking forward to seeing your graphic novel.
